Leftblock x Nike Sports Wear S/S2010 22 April '10

" LEFTBLOCK started thanks to our love for fashion and the desire to spread individualistic style. Having always preferred unconventional fashion choices, LEFTBLOCK doesn't believe that styling yourself should cost a bomb "

Said succinctly by the LEFTBLOCK fashionista bloggers Joyce, Chelle & Jacinta

So when Nike Sportswear decided to collaborate with LEFTBLOCK for an event it was destined to be nothing shy of creative & entertaining!

In this brave new world of Twitter, the first thing I noticed was the large screen displaying tweets referring to the event - NARCISSISM at its best ;)

Me with EmCee for the event, LEFTBLOCK collaborator Joyce :)

The girls took key pieces from the SS2010 collection, added their own innovative 'LEFTBLOCK' touch and provided a very unconventional Fashion Show whereby they un-dressed and re-dressed items on alternating models to demonstrate multi-functionality & versatility of their Nike collaborative creations.
Then they called upon some audience participation! We, the guests, were separated into groups, provided a box of 'goodies'/accessories and encouraged to do a LEFTBLOCK with a given Nike sportswear. Each group had to nominate a model within their group who then had to work the catwalk with said creation!

The winner was judged by the audience applause and the winner was none other than DJ Nadia who I believe clinched her win by her most original catwalk end pose... a FREEZE!
Suffice to say DJ Nadia was the chosen model from the team I was in together with Arabyrd and Bum Squad DJs CEO Latin Prince hehehehe...

Reach Org on NTV 7's The Breakfast Show with Daphne & Naz

Celebrating EARTH DAY with an Exclusive Song mp3 Download!

It's EARTH DAY! Not a just a day to think about our planet and all the damage we have caused it, but a day to learn and adopt ways in which to help sustain our beautiful environment.

There is no day better than TODAY to make CHANGES in our lives before it is too late. With the increasing number of natural disasters and phenomenons that are starting to plague Mother Earth there is no time like the present to educate ourselves with ways in which to improve her condition.

Did you stop and think what Mother Earth has achieved through the recent eruptions of volcano (I'm not even gonna try to pronounce it!) Eyjafjallajokull ?

18th April 2010

Yes humankind's air travel system was forced to a grinding halt as a result of the volcanic ash. The most evident effect was the inconvenience it caused us... the great positive effect was the huge decrease in 'fuel-burning' emissions into our atmosphere.

Isn't it about time we stopped being so ignorant? Stop thinking it doesn't REALLY affect us. Stop procrastinating and start TODAY. Stop being flakey and practise an eco-friendly lifestyle on a DAILY basis. Make it part of our everyday life.
It's time to stop disrespecting Mother Earth and start to make her proud

Everything in life is a cycle... the earth is desperately fighting to survive the damage we have caused - to the animal life, plant life, environment, atmosphere... inevitably it will reach a point of regeneration and when the Earth's core can't handle it anymore, it will fall, and take all of humankind with it!

If you don't know where to start to make a CHANGE, here's an insight to what I'm doing in TWO easy steps.

Step 1: Refer to your own personal experience of the natural beauty and 'gifts' that the Earth provides us. These are a selection of my personal photographs :

Little Fluffy Clouds

Bali, Indonesia

Phuket, Thailand (yes, that's me!)

Galle, Sri Lanka
Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia
Then imagine your world without all of this natural beauty...

Step 2 : Educate yourself in the ways you can change your daily lifestyle to make it more eco / earth friendly conscious. If you don't recycle, START. Switch the tap off when you're brushing ur teeth and when you're soaping yourself in the shower. Switch all lights off in an empty room. Minimise your use of air conditioning - use a fan instead.
Plan your travel route to help minimise your petrol consumption. Recycle your plastic bags or use shoppers (which are now readily available).
Surf the net for online organisations that sell eco- friendly products. Check out WeAreUltra & TinyTapir

Read up on the plight of animals that are close to extinction. Some may even be native to your country of origin!

As I Malaysian born in the year of the Tiger, it is only appropriate that I mention the plight of these beautiful cats - find out more here

I'm involved in a collaborative project together with hiphop artist Altimet & rock giants Deja Voodoo Spells. Together we are known as "The M.A.D. Project" and as a gift to you this EARTH DAY we are giving you our song 'CHANGE' as a FREE DOWNLOAD. If you would like a copy of the lyrics please leave a comment on this blog.

Have you ever seen a CHROMOSPHERE ?

On the way to Sunday lunch I was checking twitter and saw a tweet from Joyce the Fairy about a 'rainbow ring' around the Sun

Immediately I looked to the sky (with my sunnies on of course, as it helps to prevent sun-blindness!) and saw this :

A viral twitter chat that ensued between myself, the Fairy & Koobz as we exchanged our photos and discussed the resulting BLINDNESS that the 2 experienced *duh* hehehe

Thanks to the scientific knowledge of the Fairy, we learnt that this phenomenon is known as a CHROMOSPHERE. Usually we see this during the eclipse of the sun...a glowing ring which is the Sun's atmosphere

Wikipedia tells us this : The chromosphere (literally, "color sphere") is a thin layer of the Sun's atmosphere just above the photosphere, roughly 2,000 kilometres deep.

Check out the Fairy's coverage of said phenomenon here

I realised that despite the current state of disrepair our Earth is in with the increasing frequency of natural disasters (more recent the Earthquake in China, Icelandic Volcanic ash crippling global air travel in & out of Europe & the Tornado in our very own Petaling Jaya), Mother Nature is still able to remind us of the beauty of our planet and why we really need to make changes to our disastrous existence NOW
Will we learn and make changes before it's too late? Or is it already too late?

*sigh*

Reach Org - Food For All Campaign - Feeding the Homeless

Through my friend Sazzy Falak & the power of Twitter I found out about an organisation called REACH ORG who's is made up solely by volunteers and who's main purpose is to 'inspire' the homeless and urban poor to get back on their feet by providing aid (food / medical aid) to these people directly on the street, and through developing a communicative pathway to the relevant Government groups who can help in the the long term (for more info click here)

Any one of you can start helping by joining in on any of the 'Street-feeding' campaigns. I went to my first on Saturday night. All that was required of me was my time - it's as simple as that!

The adventure begins at midnight when all volunteers for said 'shift' meet up at a specific mamak resto. I met with the Reach Org team (family) which is headed by local Scotsman Peter Nicoll and was brought up to speed with REACH's aims and end game. Everyone is then given guidelines on the street-feeding exercise.

I don't want to get too much into the detail as I believe the best way to get to know more about this wonderful and inspiring charity is to join for one street-feeding shift.

The best I can offer you right now is to share my experience and sentiments:

My only experience I have of homeless people is seeing cardboard cities outside the various main train stations in London (Like Charing Cross, Kings Cross) & Tokyo and areas in London where tourists frequent like Soho and Picadilly Circus. As in the shanty towns of Brazil where you see small landscapes of corregated iron/steel which are the roofs of make-shift homes, 'cardboard-cities' is what I saw in London - make-shift homes created out of old cardboard boxes.
Imagine being exposed with nothing but a thin layer of cardboard to protect you from the elements (in London particularly the very wet & cold winters).

I spoke to an old lady on the street on Saturday night. She had made her home at the bottom of one of the main escalators leading up to May Bank in Puduraya. She lay on a bed of newspapers, beside her a small bag of her belongings and that was it.

I asked if she was hungry - "yes'

And I handed her a 'meal package' consisting of a bottle of water, sweetened bread, an orange & a packet of nasi lemak

Meal Package

She hurriedly took at from me and proceeded (hungrily) to open up the bag

I asked her how long she has been on the streets and she said only a few days.

When I asked her how she became homeless, she went on to explain that she had come to KL from Johore for a job to wash dishes. Only when she arrived at the place of work the employers insisted that they did not want to hire anyone above the age of 45.

She came to KL to WORK and with no work, she had no money to get her back home to Johore.

Name : Cheah Yoke Yun
Age : 58
Address : Maybank Escalator, Puduraya

Now there is only ONE very simple story that resulted in the very COMPLEX issue of

homelessness

The latest update I've just received is that Reach Org will be on NTV7's The Breakfast Show tomorrow (Tuesday 20th April) at around 9am - do tune in to learn all about this great organisation and how you can contribute.

Enjoying the Moment

I've been rushing around the last 2 months like a headless chicken with a To Do List that gets longer as each day goes by, rather than shorter.

I sleep later and wake up earlier YET there do not seem to be enough hours in the day to do everything.

I realise the only time I have for myself are the moments before I fall asleep at night and the first few moments after I wake up in the mornings... Oh and there's the minimal time I spend at the gym and of course, as Mum reminded me, the time I spend on the bog!

All to often we forget to just enjoy the moment... to stop and appreciate our surroundings, simply appreciate being healthy & being alive...

Try this :

Find a quiet space, lie down, close your eyes -

SENSE your heart beating through the tips of your fingers
LISTEN to your breath
FEEL the simplicity of being LIFE intermingled with the complexity of the system of our body and what it needs to do to keep us ALIVE

It's really hard to do...

The Ying & Yang of Life

I was overwhelmed by the wealth of knowledge, experience, information and achievements gained by 2 people I spoke to at length with yesterday. I was completely inspired but...

...it also put me in a position where once again I found myself questioning what I'm doing, why I'm doing it, how I'm doing it, where I wanna take it and if I'm doing it the right way...

This unrelenting list of questions (and to some extent self-doubt) inadvertently left me feeling rather depleted of hope, a little lost and very disillusioned.

Rather than fight the feeling, I decided to embrace it and accept there is a reason for everything.

There can be no highs without lows

No light without dark
No positive without negative

The Ying & Yang of life gives us balance and teaches us many things including patience, acceptance and appreciation

Later on that evening, I was blessed and spoiled with super special treatment, kind words, warm gestures and generous hearts as well as new, positive work prospects.

I came home and read back on a solemn tweet I had posted earlier :

"I feel a lil disillusioned.. but i know that out of disillusionment comes INSPIRATION, so I will ride this wave..."

Suddenly the tweet didn't feel so down & out

My final thoughts on this story?

Trust what 'He' has planned for us. When we lose faith in ourselves, we lose faith in 'Him'.
Embrace all that is put before us
.

It's FRIDAY!!! Let's celebrate it, cos we can :)

'Merry Melissa' aka Zen RIP 29.01.96 - 03.04.10

My little baby in the UK, Zen, my beautiful black and silver miniature schnauzer passed last week. It was strange as I had been feeling incredibly depressed the whole day - the kind of heavy hearted-feeling that prevents you from doing anything, even getting out of bed.

I couldn't put my finger on why I was feeling so empty. The last time I had felt that way was immediately after Mia's passing.... I tried to distract myself from this sickly feeling by immersing myself in music, which normally for me is a great healer. Hauled ass to my studio and put my head down

Hours later in the early afternoon, with no real progress musically, the name 'MARCHELLA' flashed on my phone and at that moment my heart dropped as I forced a very slow and dry swallow motion....

Zen had JUST been put down... She had been suffering from liver and heart cancer over the last months and the time had finally come to set her free from all her pain and say goodbye. As with Mia, she had reached a point where no medication was helping her condition or reducing her pain.

I instantly felt relieved of this disconcerting ill-feeling that had been with me for most of the day...

Is it possible that Zen had connected with me during her last hours? Some of you may think I'm psychotic having fantastical ideas - but I truly believe this.

Maybe I need to.

Mia & Zen - I miss you girls

Zen represents my life in London. She was my first lil baby. My fluff ball. My bundle of puppiness - as she never really grew up - she went through her entire life looking like a pup. She was evergreen in everyway....

I carry many hilarious stories fo Zen & her mischievious ways... but Zen's biggest moment has gotta be her feature in one of my early music videos when I was part of a duo called 'Confucius Says' in the UK: here (Go on then - have a big laugh at what I looked like!)

It is strange how Zen even came to be with me... I didnt want her in fact as she was the last of the litter to be taken, a reserved pup who unlike her other siblings, was completely disinterested in me when I went to view her. When I picked her up, she didn't give me eye contact and was limp in my hands. In fact she fulfilled all the criteria to NOT be chosen.. (if that makes any sense)

But the little Granny from Bromley, who was her owner was INSISTENT that I take her... so I entertained her for awhile thinking that she was probably lonely etc.

Then Granny pulled out Zen's pedigree certificate and at that moment I knew I had to have her.

Zen's given pedigree name read :

" Merry Melissa "
