Woooohoooooo! My first gig of 2012 and it's an acoustic-esque band show. It has been more than a year since I played with a band and I am super excited about this as I will also be playing at a different venue to which I have grown accustomed too (those of you who have come to my last few gigs will know that they have all been at No Black Tie).

7AteNine will be the venue for a new series of LIVE music sponsored by Heineken called "SESSIONS" and I get to launch it :).

I've come up with a sort of 'theme' for the evening and will be playing all sorts for u, radio hits classic and current, original material of old as well as new and unheard as well as some unreleased and never to be released material. This is pretty much exclusive to this date at 7atenine!

So please note that this is NOT a DJ Gig but me playing with a band, what I love to do most of all.

Here are the official details:

The launch of SESSIONS will feature Behind The Lights with Melissa Indot and is an up close and personal musical journey. Melissa’s lithe frame belies a commanding presence that exudes confidence through her powerful voice. This award winning lover of eclectic musical tastes will debut an Unseen & Undone performance which includes yet to be released new songs plus some famous covers done acoustic style. Supported by a 4 piece band & 2 back up vocals, SESSIONS is slated to sizzle and dazzle.

This inaugural session is at 8.30pm, Saturday 14 January 2011 and tickets are priced at RM100++ for a 2 course dinner and show or RM50 for show only, both of which include a bottle of Heineken.

So FINALLY, a BRILLIANT excuse to clear out my wardrobe and all signs in my home of potential HOARDING tendencies >_< - a Junkyard sale for all PRE-LOVED items. More like TOO LOVED as I have not been able to part with them for the longest time and they have been gathering dust!

I will be saying goodbye to LOADS of favourites of mine that I've been hanging on to for far too long for reasons that may include :

1. I may need it again
2. It's too good to let go of
3. It may be collectible (maybe on my 100th Birthday)
4. It's part of an (imaginary) set
5. It will be an heirloom of mine
6. I want to pass it to my children IF I were to ever have any...
7. I will fit into that TINY size again ONE DAY (dream on...)

I think you get the idea.... Anything from shoes to bags to jeans to tees to tops to jackets, casual and formal-ish at MAD MAD prices! We may even have some brand new, unworn, "tag still on" items and don't worry if you havent got enough cash - we are as decent people as you are and will happily take a deposit on the day and hold the item for you til you are able to organise for the balance payment - just be sure to remember to exchange contact details so that we can stay in touch!

What'll Break You / Apocalips

Caught a brilliant double bill of plays currently showing at KLPAC - What'll Break You and Apocalips. The two plays couldn't be more different, and together they will take you on a rollercoaster ride through a plethora of emotions.

What I am most proud of is that this is a wholly Malaysian-made production from the writing to the directing, stage design, styling etc. The actors all gave stellar performances - but with greats like Gavin Yap & Zahim Albakri, how wrong can you go?

Style Rocks 2011

My most recent DJ gig was to play at the Style Rocks Party at Euphoria. A fun and energy filled event hosted by the Melium Group (responsible for bringing top fashion and lifestyle brands to Malaysia) in conjunction with the Malaysian International Gourmet Festival (MIGF).

I was also roped into doing the Melium 'Friends' Catwalk which happened earlier on in the evening. Being on a stage is a no brainer for me as long as I have a microphone in my hand so this was a fairly torturous experience for me! Many other great Malaysian personalities of an eclectic array of industries were there to do the catwalk and that certainly helped to calm my nerves. Carmen Soo, Debra Henry, Hansen Lee, Dominic Lau, Elaine Dale and DJ Goldfish are to name but a few who strutted their stuff on the catwalk.What fun it was in the end!

Went to visit Bernard's new concept store today, share with him news of PopMuseSic and hear first hand from the man the 'story' behind Area 27.

This is gonna be a lot more than just a multi-brand boutique and I am very excited about this for Bernard as a friend but more so for the artists, designers, musicians and all the creatives in KL - it's all about sharing great ideas, being proud of your individuality, expressing yourself and not being afraid of breaking free of those (sometimes self-imposed) boundaries.

This may make little sense to you now and perhaps less sense to you after you've visited Area 27 but I have a big dream in me that has been festering for a few years now and to see someone do something like this, a person with great credentials and achievements as Bernard, 'give back' by helping to provide a platform for creatives, only fuels my ambition to realise this dream of mine - one day.

One of my favourites books is Betty DeGeneres' autobiography "Love, Ellen".

It's an intimate account of Ellen and her mum's journey to stardom and fame - of single-parenting, of "coming-out" but more so of an amazing mother and daughter bond and the gift of acceptance. I read it back in 2004. Am tempted to have a re-read for good measure - even if just to see how far my own life has come since then.

Singapore Grand Prix 2011 Day 1

A fantastic line-up at this year's Formula One Grand Prix in Singapore meant a trip down was essential.

Luckily we pre-empted this great line-up (knowing how high the standards are in Singapore and what pride they hold in any event that is held there) so we booked our room wayyyyyyy back - like in March!

As a result we got a mad rate at the brand spanking new, uber luxurious and swoon-worthy Fullerton Bay Hotel.

The 'basic' twin we got was right up my street. I LOVE it when interiors combine both comtemporary and classic finishes and designs. There is great usage of wood and glass, with clean lines without leaving you feeling cold. In fact the room was immensely cosy and had fantastic supplies with regards to office, degustation and bathroom accessories.

So I started this week with a 'To Do' List that is as long as both my arms together (which incidentally from the tip of one middle finger to the other, would equal my height - go google it) and I feel like crap.

Why? Cos of last weekend at Singapore's F1 which was crazy, followed by a week of hectic work which ended up with 2 projects I've been working on for nearly a year actually being CONFIRMED *yeaaaaaahbaybehhhhh*

Rounded up with a 'farewell' Friday night out for two friends returning to China (who will probably be back in 6 weeks >_<) and a Saturday night of hopping.

First to see my fave Salah Wrong play at Daikan... errr Daikanay.... errrr that place on Changkat next to the Green Man. The girls put together a great playlist of 90s tunes - nostalgic to say the least - although I must admit that Clem and I did confess that we didn't recognise a few tunes. Nonetheless it didn't stop us from head-banging and jumping up and down like over grown teenagers. Having said that, quite a large percentage of the crowd looked like they had only just graduated from teenage-hood, so Joyce and I reckoned they were probably hearing these songs for the very first time!

After only one beverage I wished the girls farewell as they bopped their heads on the dance floor and battled the human and vehicular traffic outside making my way to 7ate9 where DJ Nadia holds her newly secured bi-monthly residency. She provided us with such a great sound track - housey, nu disco tunes with a classic and sophisticated vibe that you can jump up and down or simply sway your head to - whatever suits your fancy. This is a great venue for a Saturday night especially if you don't wanna be squashed into a club with sweaty, over enthusiastic peeps, but you also don't wanna be at a lifeless bar - A great in-betweener.

And to top the night off, DJ Nazkimo came along to show DJ Nadia and our brand some love as he came decked in his PopMuseSic 'Piano Keys' tee shirt

*Phew* What an insane but amazing 10 day run I've had. Great work, great news, great friends and so much love. Positivity all the way!

Yup you heard that band name right... and the costumes definitely fit the bill as you will see from this performance of their's on TOTP aka Top Of The Pops.

So we have yet another public holiday as today is Malaysia Day! And what is the significance of today? Well this Day in 1963 the Malaysian Federation wad formed ie. North Borneo, Sarawak, Singapore and Malaya came together to form Malaysia.

Rather than work as I would normally I decided to have a day of doing nothing. Utter bliss.

So far I've managed to watch 3 travel programs, eaten 3 meals (it's only 5pm) and played around with numerous photography apps on my iPhone.

I got a booking to play 2 DJ sets with a Live PA over 2 days at the stunning Nammos Beach Club which is part of the gorgeous Karma Kandara Resort in Bali (part of the Leading Hotels of the World).

Imagine playing with the rolling waves in front of you - it's really that amazing. The crowd were so responsive and enthusiastic especially when I performed 'This Time' & 'Starlight'.

The place really is dreamy up on the cliff tops, looking down onto its very own private beach with panoramic views of the Indian ocean. The best thing about it is Management had great feedback regarding my performance and they want me back!

Karma Resorts have resorts in Koh Samui (Thailand), Margaret River (Australia) and Pelikanos (Greece) with two other locations in Bali other than Kandara so this is a very exciting new phase in my career.

First Official DJ Gig this year!

Most of you who have been following my blog this year will know what a roller coaster ride I've been having juggling work and new opportunities that have come my way other than my normal 'music' work.

So making time to finish the album, whilst having international releases of my remixed material via Fierce Angel as well as managing production of my new tee line PopMuseSic with my buddy Nads, has meant there has been almost zero time to do any DJing whatsoever!!

So I am proud to share with you that my first DJ gig for 2011 is this Wednesday (11 May, 2011) and it's for none other than TopShop! It's a little preview party for TopShop's Fashion Forward Members only.

Ok So I realise this post is a bit late but I have had THE maddest month of April with the last week of April being the most stressed ever!!

In fact I'm beginning to wonder if it is just me that seems to be having a whirlwind of a 2011 year so far.... it's been Go!Go!Go! since new year's Day - seriously. Juggling events, writing and recording the album, proposals, interior design business and PopMuseSic is NO walk in the park.

Fortunately the hours and days of work have been kindly peppered and marinated with quality chill and party sessions one special one of which was Joyce aka Kinky Blue Fairy's Birthday party suitably Dotty-themed. So around May last year I blogged about the similarities in make-up concept between a shoot I did, with Kelis' make-up in her video for 'Acapella'.

Well I just watched Katy Perry's video for her latest single 'E.T.' and thought the same thing (although Katy's is pretty extreme especially with the lenses, what with her being an extra-terrestrial...)

Honestly, I'm quite a fan of Katy but I really don't think much of her latest single - subject matter doesn't work, nor does the 'dark' overtone and the lyrics are too cheesey -

"Imma gonna disrobe you, then probe you" - are you serious Kanye??

As for video ... it just doesn't work when someone has drop dead gorgeous as Katy, 'uglifies' herself. Big no-no for me.

As much of a cliche as it may be - Children ARE our future - whether born from us or taken on by us through choice, situation or the will of God, whatever your religion. So surely if you believe in God, you know that he protects the meek, the weak, the defenseless, the innocent and the vulnerable and who more than fits those criteria than children? It's about time we addressed and updated some of our archaic laws and systems.

I know this looks like a long post but we do have a voice and a responsibility to our children (even if you have none of your own, you may have nieces, nephews, cousins etc) so please commit a little time to read the following letter.

We would love to get it published but I'm pretty darn sure it won't be... so we do what we can to spread the word around and 'educate' people. To educate is to empower.

Who needs to get things 'published' anymore with this wonderful virtual world we have at our finger-tips called the world wide web - please do your part to make this letter viral.

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

My mummy wanted to write this letter and use expletives and cite laws to fight on behalf of children like me in Malaysia, but I told her it would sound better if it came from me and you might listen? Mummy tends to yell a little too loud and she's such a drama queen sometimes!

So here goes...

Dear Prime Minister,

My name is Zara Hana Abdullah. I know this is my name because this is what Mummy says it is and everyone who knows me and loves me says this is my name. My Aunty Shireen named me Zara and my Aunty Sian named me Hana and told me what the 2 names mean- Zara is 'Princess' and Hana means Grace...so i'm actually Princess Grace, which makes my Oma very happy because she loves all those Grace Kelly movies.

But according to Malaysian law, I do not exist legally because I have no birth certificate. Every child is entitled to a birth certificate, so that we know they have a name and some information about them. Mummy says the reason why I don't have one is because in the application form for a birth certificate, there is a box that says," if you don't have proof of the child's birth, then there must be 2 witnesses who was there at the time of birth. I don't have 2 witnesses since Mummy found me at 2 and a half months old.So now, she cannot fill out the birth certificate. Welfare officers say they'll help Mummy fill out the application, but that was last year. I know the Welfare Department cannot do everything, so Mummy nags them once a week and now she tells me they run when they see her or do not pick up the phone. But I know Mummy will catch them and make them file the application for me.

I know I'm 3 years old because that it is what the Aunty told my mummy- the one who gave me to Mummy? I also know I'm 3 years old because Mummy took me to the doctor and the doctor said that's most probably how old I am. And Aunty said, I was born on the 18th of February so that's when I celebrate my birthday!

When I get my birth certificate, Mummy says that my name cannot be Zara Hana Abdullah because I'm Muslim and I don't know who my real daddy is so my name must be Zara Hana Binte Abdullah to show that I am the daughter (Binte) of Abdullah ( God- one of 99 names for Allah) which also means that I am a child 'born out of wedlock'

Because Mummy and I had to go to court, to finalize my adoption, my birth certificate will be exchanged for a certificate of adoption, which looks like a birth cert except for a clause that says I'm adopted. I'm okay with that as my legal paper. But there may be problems when I apply for a passport, open a bank statement , apply to university, try to get a visa abroad...is this true, Mr, Prime Minister?

Mummy says too that I am not Malaysian. That I have no citizenship- I am stateless, which means I don't belong to any country and Malaysia does not want me if Mummy doesn't fight for me or you don't pass the law to say it's okay for Mummy to give me her citizenship?

May I please belong to a country?

Without a country, I cannot go to school, I cannot get a passport, I cannot go to university, leave the country, travel , get married, or really know what i"ll be able to be when I grow up because I have no future! No future like my brother or my cousins?

Mummy says that under Muslim law, she is just my Guardian, not my adopted parent and it will be more difficult for her to apply for me to get citizenship. Is this true? if it's possible, can you please tell me how long it will take? In days please? I can't count months and years yet!

Mummy was very angry yesterday after her meeting because she said some grown up officer said that I am one of 'those' children- a foreigner that does not deserve the same rights and protection as a Malaysian. How does she know I'm not Malaysian and not a foreigner? If you're not sure, wouldn't you assume that I just am so I have a brighter future?

Another grown up said that I am a threat to national security because there are so many of us. I'm quite sure if someone gave me away and it's now been 3 years, no one is going to come back and claim me! So, I'm really no threat! Just give me PR status please, till you investigate more but let me go to school with my brother and cousins.

Okay, it's me now...took the laptop back from Zara, who's gone to kindergarten...someone was nice enough to let me send her to kindergarten with no papers because they know me and her brother!

The fact is that the Adoption law has been in existence since 1952 and we have different laws for Peninsula Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. There has been one revision made in 1984. There are different adoption laws and regulations for Muslim children and non Muslim children.

I apparantly, am Zaid's adopted mother but Zara's guardian till she's 18? I'm just absolutely confused by this difference and apparantly this affects the process for citizenship and her basic rights.

The process of adoption is apparantly subjective as is the criteria. There is no standardization, it's more difficult for poor people to adopt legally and the laws and responsibilities by the different agencies are so archaic and convoluted!

Immigration says, JKM, JKM says JPN and so on and so forth! AG's Chamber just says, " saya yang menurut perintah'

In the meantime, I'm pulling my hair out, running from one agency to another, trying to placate hysterical parents on how they can get travel passes for their children - it's Immigration again guys who issue travel passes and no, no JKM letter to help, Syariah law..who knows what, JKM looks at guardianship of children but JPN decides on adopted children?

I need to go back and study the law and find ways and volunteers to help me dissect all these different laws and ways to protect our children in the meantime.

We need to say that yes, 'Prime Minister, we understand you have a country to protect and laws to uphold, but get with the times and look at how these old laws are hurting children. Children who would love this country and serve this country well and be productive, committed citizens.

We do this- delay,review, take our time, we continue to ensure that the poor stay poor, that marginalized children stay marginalized and children stay invisible!And they don't exist!

I know my daughter exists! And she's 3 and her name is Zara Hana Abdullah and she deserves to be Malaysian! And she deserves a better life than what the laws, if they remain the same, will condemn her too!

How time flies.... 7 year itch

I miss Hannah

Hannah is one of my oldest school friends from the UK. We were at boarding school together and being super BFFs we shared a room for our entire Lower 6th year (not the norm as you normally change dormitory / room mates every term/simester)No doubt we got up to lots of mischief together both in and out of school - countless 'exeat' (weekend leave) and half term shenanigans and adventures. We've holidayed together and Hannah even came out and stayed with me in KL for 6 weeks during the summer of our GCSE results... *eeeek* that was forever-ago.

I dug out a couple of pix of us taken 7 years ago during a holiday together at her Dad's home in France (on a truffle farm no less!). Hannah had just met Rob, 6 weeks earlier and was going on holiday with a bunch of her nearest and dearest to celebrate her birthday. Needless to say we all had plans to put Rob through a 'friends of Hannah initiation' process. Its amazing he survived it.

What occurred over the next 3 nights cannot be put in print let alone I publish the pictures. I did manage to find 2 that I am able to share....

Hannah has seen me through some of my toughest times - work stress, redundancy, heartache and heart break. Suffice to say that I have missed dearly in the 7 years that I have been back here in Malaysia

7 years on and Hannah and Rob have 2 beautiful sons - Harry and Laurie and a baby girl on the way.

7 years on and I think of and miss my old buddy more than ever before - I guess this is my 7 year itch ;)

I can't wait to see them all.... very soon.

The end of Feb and beginning of March was a bit of an insane time for me as a strange twist of fate ended up giving me the responsibility of organising an exclusive event for AirAsiaX.

In conjunction with the recent launch of their Paris - Kuala Lumpur route, AAX not only flew out new Malaysian accessory brand KLutched and their team to Paris during Paris Fashion Week but also threw an intimate party to introduce themselves to Parisians. With me providing the entertainment for the night by way of DJ-ing, it was truly a Malaysian night!

Is Mother Earth turning her back on us?

I have been resisting blogging about the Tsunami in Japan but felt compelled to tonite as I stumbled upon a handful of personal video footage.

The most harrowing coverage I've seen is a bystander's video footage of the tsunami washing through his town. I literally feared for the videographer's life as he seemed metres away from the angry torrent of the tsunami as it multiplied in depth and strength in a matter of minutes. The water turned a deathly shade of ebony...

I felt extreme fear and sense of loss as I watched it and cannot begin to imagine how the victims of this great natural disaster felt then, and feel now.

Tonite I also visited a friend who just lost her Father, unexpectedly. So much sadness and loss on a global and personal level in a matter of days.

Why do such things have to happen around us to make us take stock of what we are blessed with?

Will this be the disease of the human condition that causes our demise?

Both are great friends, cousins, nieces, grand-daughters, sisters, mothers (grand-mother). WOW, am I one lucky Girl!

For a woman, probably one of the most influential role is being a Mother - here's little something I found

A friend (hehe) recently went to the launch of the SS2011 Thomas Sabo Collection... she even blogged about it here. Despite having purchased many pieces for myself and as gifts, I wasn't invited to the event *sniff*sniff* (sadd0)

But seriously it really didn't matter that much to me that the customer appreciation lacked somewhat cos said friend, in being reminded of me everytime she spots a Thomas Sabo piece, generously gave the gift that she received to me *love* (before I even got to complain to her about my lack of invitation #divamoments)

FINALLY, I got to try out FatSpoon in TTDI! Michelle's resto featuring her granny's home favourites and recipes which were truly scrumptious - delicious and satisfying indeed. I must admit I went having reservations about the authenticity of the claim of "home recipes" and was completely blown away - absolutely SPOT ON especially with the more chinese influenced dishes.

Going there inadvertently took me down memory-lane : reading time at primary school supervising reading time during my Lower 6th (Form 5) year (in the UK) as part of compulsory community service we had to do for the local under-privileged primary school.

Who can forget Peter and Jane reading books!

Totally tickled when we were handed these and couldn't wait to have a read - nearly had a cardiac arrest when on opening the book I saw my name.... Could it be that my own copy of the book from eons ago had found itself back into my hands???

Coachella 2011

And so the time that all those desert loving festival goers around the globe have been waiting for - the line-up announcement for Coachella 2011
And if twitter is anything to go by, I must admitbthat the line-up is far from over-inspiring. I've been trying to work out why that is?

Could it be because I've been lucky enough to visit a lot of other music festivals in the years that have passed since my last Coachella experience?
Or maybe because we now get a lot of acts visiting us out here in Malaysia and the SE Asia region...
A combo of the two perhaps?

Whatever it is I don't want to come across spoilt or ungrateful - but the great pull of Coachella is the culmination of the arts; art, dance and music - the established, the pioneers, the movers & shakers & the ones to look out for in the future. And honestly this year there aren't many acts playing that I haven't already seen or that I want to see. Hang on a minute

This is COACHELLA we're talking about - set in the a huge field in the middle of a desert, peppered with palm trees with mountain ranges in the distance - a dream setting - just being there is an experience in itself. Let's take another look at that line-up...

Incidentally, a lot of preparation goes into setting up Coachella - unlike Glastonbury (amoung other festivals in the UK) one thing you can be sure of in Palm Springs is the weather - clear blue skies sprinkled with the additional white fluffy cloud, coupled with dry heat and smiling sunshine.

This exclusive area will include, your own separate check-in location, fully furnished shakir style tents with air conditioning, private restrooms & showers, golf cart shuttles to and from stages, free private parking lot, drop off area, breakfast and late night snacks, added security, outdoor chairs, shade tents + outdoor lighting, games and more!

SAFARI Tent or Personal Lounges

$5000 (+ applicable charges) for the first 2 people.

$1250 for each additional person to stay in your tent.

There are only a limited amount of these (2 person) Shikar style tents being made available. Access to this area will be solely limited to Safari tent wristband holders. These are the highest end of elegance and sophistication with luxury interiors, fully furnished for your choice of either sleeping or Lounging. Sleeping tents come with the choice of 1 or two queen sized beds, linens, tables, flooring, pillows, chairs, AIR conditioning, electrical outlets and more. Personal Lounge tents come with AIR conditioning, electrical outlets, couch, chairs, table, flooring and other personal touches. Lounges would also be comfortable for sleeping but no bedding provided. Purchasing these special luxury accommodations include 2 ALL ACCESS "guest" wristbands with special shuttles taking you inside the venue.

Indio is in fact one of the largest polo fields in Palm Springs and my first time there was actually many moons ago (back in the early 90s) to watch Polo. I was going to post a picture up but immediately decided against it once I saw the state of myself at the time *coughs*

Drake.

Not a word I've cared much about in the past nor taken much notice of.

Simply reminds of English Language gender lessons...

A female Ox is a COW.
A male Ox is a BULL.

A female chicken is a HEN.
A male chicken is a COCKEREL.

A female duck is a duck or HEN.
A male duck is a DRAKE.

But ever since Drake the hip hop artist hit the music scene, the smallest appearance or utter of the word grabs my attention.

I love his debut album that dropped last year : Thank Me Later : especially for its downbeat vibe and sparse soundscape. Stand out track for me is FIREWORKS featuring the one and only Alicia Keys.

What hooked me with Drake? His poetry... lyrical skills but most of all his unique voice tone and style - it's hypnotic and engaging.

More recently Rihanna has Drake featured on her single What's My Name and like reminiscing with an old flame, the first time I heard this song I felt such a comforting familiarity and sense of 'knowing'.

I like everything about it. The single cover : the 70's-esque soft focus. Ri Ri's hair, the flowers in it...

I love whoever styled Rihanna - her ensemble is just so perfect. I can see my fashionista blogger girlfriend Andrea aka Strrapped, in a get-up just like this... In fact am gonna email her the pic
The production of the song is sparse, without being empty, decisive without being intrusive, strong without losing the sensuality... and boy, the lyrics are sexy indeed. My favourite lyric exerpts :

Heard of RetroSuperFuture ? They are the ones who kick-started the renewed passion for acetate sunglasses. Top quality sunnies out of Italy born out the highest quality materials. Many fashionista friends of mine are easily frenzied by new additions to their collections.

During my last holiday I discovered a 'super-brand' called Gold and Wood. Good grief! Talk about falling in love at first sight (how completely frivolous, superficial and materialistic of me, but what the hell)

Their range of sunglasses are made of truly luxurious materials - super retro yet super modern and uber stylish and unsurprisingly the price bracket for them more than matches this high standard *love*love*love*

Made of unusual wood and uncommon finishes as well as exotic materials such as horn, these pieces are nothing short of outstanding.

Here are a few that caught my eye (honestly the pictures do them no justice) In order to truly appreciate them you've just got to be tactile with them - I spend quite a while trying them on and studying every little detail.
